Application to The Growing Livelihoods Fund

10/6/2015

LCG are currently preparing an application for the Growing Livelihoods fund. Growing Livelihoods is a two year (2014/2015) development partnership project between the Carnegie UK Trust, Plunkett Foundation and the Land Settlement Association Charitable Trust. It aims to create, test and promote new opportunities in smaller-scale food growing. The initiative has a particular focus on the use of co-operation and innovation to help create viable livelihoods in this sector.

The Plunkett Foundation was founded in 1919 by Sir Horace Plunkett, the pioneer of rural co-operation in Ireland. The Foundation focuses on the development of co-operatives in the areas of Rural Community Enterprises, Community Shops, Co-operative Pubs, and Community Food Enterprises.

The first creamery co-op in Ireland was in Drumcollogher in 1889. It would a great honour to bring some of the Growing Livelihoods fund back to Limerick where Plunkett started etc.  LCG will be using a community garden to grow food and act as a learning hub for food-growing and livelihood creation.

February 2015
Many thanks to Duncan Stuart and his Eco Eye team for their coverage of Limerick Community Grocery and other co-operatives around Ireland. This episode is part of a great series on the challenges facing us regarding climate change, and the solutions possible and being realised. In this particular episode of the series, Duncan meets people and communities who are fighting back,  taking their cue from the past, drawing on the notion of 'meitheal' to rebuild their communities, forming co-ops and building a more robust future for Ireland.

Click here to see this episode and the Co-operative (LCG coverage starts at 19.12).

Limerick Community Grocery takes first place and €5,000 bursary at Get Involved Awards
We are delighted to announce that, on 26 February 2015, Limerick Community Grocery was awarded the overall winning place in the national  Get Involved  competition at the ceremony in Athlone.

In May 2014, Limerick Community Grocery was selected by the Limerick Leader, under the Get Involved initiative, to be the local voluntary sustainability project that it would champion in 2014.  The Get Involved Initiative was established by two local newspaper associations -
NNI Local and Local Ireland - and is sponsored by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to lead and promote sustainability projects 'with the ultimate aim of creating local jobs and ensuring that local communities all over Ireland become much more resilient to the many challenges they face.'

In November 2014, we - along with five other projects - were selected as the national finalists in the  competition.

You can find out all about the initiative here.
