This year has brought huge growth to our co-op. We now have over 700 members, 50 local suppliers, 3 employees and 2 TUS participants all contributing to a vibrant, busy community shop which aims to be a one-stop grocery store for all its members.
Since September's Nationwide programme and the arrival of Brian, our development manager, the co-op has seen a huge surge in business, and hundreds of new products on the shelves. We have finally introduced the long-awaited meat range and expanded all other ranges including non-food products. As always, we encourage you to request products that are not currently stocked - this is YOUR co-op!!
We ran several events this year which were very well attended, including The People's Kitchen, International Co-operatives Day, Lifelong Learning Festival, Culture Night, Green Friday, and we celebrated our first birthday at Tait House with a week of events and a big birthday party. Thanks to all who helped co-ordinate these events and to all who attended. A special thanks to the staff in Tait House for being so helpful during all our events.
We have also run a series of talks on various health and lifestyle topics and we hope to continue these in the new year. These talks are at a very affordable cost and we hope you will avail of the opportunity to access this information and support the speakers. Thank you to those who attended the November talks and a special thanks to our speakers.
Early in 2018 we will be setting up a committee to look at the whole area of membership - the fee, the current two-tier system, and other issues surrounding membership. We invite all members, community and co-operative, to join this committee which will make important decisions for the future of the co-op. Your involvement in your co-op is vital!
Finally, I want to again thank everyone who contributed to the running of the co-op this year.
Thank you to all our volunteers: the event planners, the cooks, the bakers, the cleaners, the decorators, the gardeners, the painters, the hamper-packers, the shelf-stackers, the movers, the photographers & videographers, the artists, the musicians, the teachers, the students and all the organisers.
Thank you to our hard-working staff and Board who contribute so much, and to all our family members for your patience and support.
Thank you to each and every member who regularly shops with us. By shopping at The Urban Co-op, you are ensuring the survival of the co-operative model and contributing to a sustainable Limerick by supporting local farmers, local producers and local small businesses. Here's hoping 2018 is even bigger and better!
