22,000 coffee cups disposed of in Ireland every hour, source mywaste.ie 19th July 2018.
We offer compostable cups, and reuse options to create art. However the used cups need to be clean, leaving coffee or tea residue means they can't be upcycled. What if everyone brought their own cup? Can one person may a difference? Will you? Waste Prevention Officer with the Southern Region Waste Management Office and Recycling List Ireland’s Pauline McDonogh said, “Once the reusable cup has been used more than 15 times, it is more sustainable than a disposable cup.” Geraldine Fitzpatrick Salad leaves and lettuce are one of the most wasted foods. No one wants limp lettuce!
Here are two tips on how to keep your salad leaves and lettuce free for longer. The first tip is from zerowasteweek.co.uk Seperate the salad leaves and lettuce, put them in a container of water, and place in the fridge The second tip is from Neven Maguire Wash salad leaves and lettuce, put them in a glass bowl, cover with wet kitchen roll and place in the fridge I have been using Neven's tip for a few years and love that I have fresh lettuce daily. I am off to try the first tip and see how that work's out. They are fantastic, delicious and I am taking to preserving and fermenting other foods. I have less waste and more gut-friendly food. Chopped a quarter of the preserved lemon and cook with your rice, add to roast chicken, salads, eggs etc. Enjoy!
Please send me your upcycling or zero waste ideas. bookings@theurbanco-op.ie Geraldine I bought delicious fresh spinach last week and started using it in smoothies for myself and the teenager. Then I discovered I had too much and decided to blitz it with a little bit of water and put this in ice-cube trays. I now have frozen spinach for our morning smoothie or any other time we feel like spinach.

A chance meeting the fantastic Shirley of Petals & Paper led to an amazing zero waste project for our coffee cups and our BPA till receipts. The talented Shirley turns them into wonderful writing gift sets. You can find her at various markets and our own Friday Food & Craft fair.
